Fibonacci retracement levels mark where traders often watch for a pullback to pause or reverse. Enter a swing high and swing low, choose the direction of the prior move, and the calculator lists each level.
The formula
- Prior move up: Level = High − (High − Low) × Ratio
- Prior move down: Level = Low + (High − Low) × Ratio
Common ratios are 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8% and 78.6%.
Worked example
Swing low $100, swing high $120, prior move up (range $20):
- 38.2% level: $112.36
- 50% level: $110.00
- 61.8% level: $107.64
How traders use it
- Look for a pullback that stalls near a level and shows a reversal candle or a volume change.
- Place the stop-loss beyond the next level or the swing point, then size the trade from that distance.
- Prefer levels that line up with support, resistance or a moving average.
Honest limits
Retracement levels are widely watched, which is part of why they sometimes work, but they are not predictive on their own. Price often passes straight through them. Treat them as reference areas.
