A pip is the standard unit for measuring price moves in forex. Its cash value depends on your position size and the currency pair. Enter your lots, units per lot, pip size and the number of pips to see the value per pip and your total gain or loss.

The formula

Pip value = Lots × Units per lot × Pip size

The result is in the quote currency (the second currency in the pair). If that differs from your account currency, multiply by the conversion rate.

Worked example

EUR/USD, 1 standard lot (100,000 units), pip size 0.0001 on a USD account:

100,000 × 0.0001 = $10 per pip. A 20-pip move is $200.

Lot typeUnitsValue per pip (USD-quoted pair)
Standard100,000$10
Mini10,000$1
Micro1,000$0.10

Pairs quoted in JPY

Pip size for JPY pairs is usually 0.01. USD/JPY at 1 lot gives 100,000 × 0.01 = 1,000 yen per pip. To convert to dollars, divide by the USD/JPY rate, or enter 1 ÷ the rate in the conversion field.

Common mistakes

  • Using the wrong pip size. Check whether your broker quotes fractional pips (pipettes).
  • Forgetting currency conversion. Value in the quote currency is not always your account currency.
  • Sizing by lots instead of risk. Use the position size calculator to choose lots from your stop-loss distance.

FAQ

What is a pip? Usually 0.0001 of a price, or 0.01 for JPY pairs.

Do all brokers use the same lot size? Most use 100,000 units for a standard lot. Check your broker’s contract specifications.
