With leverage, your position is closed automatically if the price moves far enough against you. Enter your entry price, direction, leverage and the exchange’s maintenance margin rate to estimate where that happens.

The formulas (isolated margin, simplified)

  • Long: Liquidation = Entry × (1 − 1/Leverage + Maintenance margin)
  • Short: Liquidation = Entry × (1 + 1/Leverage − Maintenance margin)

Worked example

Long at $60,000, 10x leverage, 0.5% maintenance margin:

60,000 × (1 − 0.10 + 0.005) = $54,300, which is 9.5% below entry.

LeverageApprox. distance to liquidation (long, 0.5% maintenance)
5x19.5%
10x9.5%
25x3.5%
50x1.5%

Important limits

This is an estimate. Real liquidation prices depend on the exchange, fees, funding, cross or isolated margin and tiered maintenance rates. Always check the figure your exchange shows, and place a stop-loss well before the liquidation price.

FAQ

Why is liquidation closer at higher leverage? Less margin backs the position, so a smaller move wipes it out.

Should my stop-loss be above the liquidation price? Yes. If you are stopped out first, you keep the remaining margin.
