Profit & Loss Calculator

Work out your net profit or loss on a long or short trade after fees.

Calculation Results

For education only. Not financial advice. Trading involves substantial risk of loss.

Enter your entry price, exit price, quantity and total fees to see your gross profit, net profit and return on the position. Choose long if you bought first, or short if you sold first.

The formulas

  • Long: Gross P&L = (Exit − Entry) × Quantity
  • Short: Gross P&L = (Entry − Exit) × Quantity
  • Net P&L = Gross P&L − Total fees
  • Return on position = Net P&L ÷ (Entry × Quantity)

Worked examples

Long trade. Buy 100 shares at $50, sell at $53, total fees $4. Gross = $300, net = $296. Position cost was $5,000, so the return on position is 5.92%.

Short trade. Sell 100 shares at $50, buy back at $47, total fees $4. Gross = $300, net = $296.

Why fees matter

Fees are fixed per trade, so they hurt small wins the most. A $6 profit with $4 in fees leaves $2. If you trade often, add up your monthly fees and compare them to your total profit. Include commissions, spreads, exchange fees and overnight or funding charges. For a full round trip, enter the combined total.

Return on position is not return on account

A 5.92% return on a $5,000 position is only about 0.6% of a $50,000 account. Check both numbers. The position size calculator shows how large a position is relative to your account.
